Physiotherapy for vertigo
Vertigo
Vertigo is the sensation of spinning or motion when you are not actually moving that way. Some common vestibular causes can respond well to targeted assessment and treatment.

When the room spins, the trigger pattern matters.
Position-related vertigo is assessed differently from general dizziness.
Vertigo can be triggered by rolling in bed, lying back, looking up, bending, or other head movements. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one common vestibular cause, but not every spinning sensation is BPPV.
A vestibular physiotherapy assessment may include positional testing, eye-movement observation, balance testing, and treatment such as repositioning manoeuvres when findings support that approach.
Understanding your symptoms
What can help explain vertigo symptoms?
Timing, duration, head-position triggers, associated symptoms, and examination findings help distinguish common vestibular patterns from presentations that need other medical assessment.
Head-position triggers
Brief spinning with rolling, looking up, or lying back can fit certain positional vestibular patterns.
Inner-ear balance signals
The vestibular system helps detect head movement and orientation in space.
Residual balance sensitivity
Even after strong spinning improves, people may remain cautious or unsteady with movement for a period.
Other causes of dizziness
Not all vertigo is positional or appropriate for physiotherapy, so screening remains important.
Your next steps
A clear process from assessment to progress.
The exact treatment may change, but the process should stay understandable. We assess, explain, progress, and keep the plan connected to your goals.
-
1
Understand the pattern
Clarify when spinning occurs, how long it lasts, and which positions trigger it.
-
2
Choose the right starting point
Perform vestibular or positional tests when appropriate.
-
3
Build capacity progressively
Use repositioning manoeuvres or targeted vestibular exercises when findings indicate.
-
4
Return to what matters
Rebuild confidence with head movement, walking, and normal daily positions.
